Water contamination in Biodiesel
More water in biodiesel sensor information

Online measurements are now possible using the
EESIFLO mini EASZ-1.
Biodiesel is hydrophilic. Some of the water present
is residual to processing, and some comes from storage
tank condensation. The presence of water is a problem
because
- Water reduces the heat of combustion of the
bulk fuel. This means more smoke, harder starting,
less power.
- Water causes corrosion of vital fuel system components:
fuel pumps, injector pumps, fuel lines, etc.
- Water freezes to form ice crystals near 0 °C
(32 °F). These crystals provide sites for nucleation
and accelerate the gelling of the residual fuel.
- Water accelerates the growth of microbe colonies
which can plug up a fuel system. Biodiesel users
who have heated fuel tanks therefore face a year-round
microbe problem.
Previously, the amount of water contaminating biodiesel
has been difficult to measure by taking samples,
since water and oil separate. Getting a representative
sample is practically impossible. Although lab methods
can accurately measure water in an oil sample, it
is too difficult to obtain a small sample that represents
the total amount of water in the fluid.
However it is now possible to measure the water
content using EESIFLO EASZ-1 online water sensors.
This means that 100% of the biodiesel passing through
the process is being monitored 24 hours a day.

The EASZ-1 water
sensor has its sensor elements made out of stainless
steel. The method used is accurate detection
of changes in dielectric of the fluid. Since
the biodiesel and water have very different
dielectric constants, a tiny or large amount
of water can be accurately measured due to the
permittivity change. The EASZ-1 does this online
in real time so that moisture or free water
contamination can be detected immediately. Built
in temperature sensors connected to the PCB
allow the units to monitor a change in temperature
so that the measurements can be compensated
when the oil is heated or cooled .
This improves overall accuracy. Once the sensor is
installed, there is little or no maintenance since
the sensing elements are made up of two solid tubes
which act like two separated plates measuring capacitance
of the media in between. The response time for the
EASZ-1 is approximately 1 second and the measuring
ranges can be changed by the user from 0-1%, 0-3%,
0-10% and 0-25%. Higher versions are also available
on request. |
EESIFLO International is an ISO 9001:2000 manufacturer
of Fluid Measuring Instruments and apparatus and
audited by SGS (certificate number US06/0478.2
The EASZ-1 water sensor is a development that started
in the early 90’s with a view to designing
and producing a reliable and cost effective water
in oil sensor with rapid detection capability and
above all, something that was easy to use and maintain.
