Installation of 4" EESiFlo EASZ-1 Water-in-Oil Monitor at Oil manufacturing Plant in South East-Asia

oil theft prevention

The following report details the functionality of the EESiFlo EASZ-1 during a recent evaluation at a large commercial Oil plant in South-East Asia. This plant receives tanker truck loads of unrefined oil from remote producers. The plant owner suspects that water is being added during transport to increase the value of the delivered product.

The EASZ-1 has been used in similar applications where the quality of oil or fuel has been compromised but it was important for this clients to test the applicability of the water sensor in situ before ordering multiple units. A single 4 inch EASZ-1 was installed on the transfer line between the tanker trucks and the plant. When the trucks unload, the EASZ-1 measures the product as it leaves the truck with the goal of accurately determining the quantity of water contained in each truck.

During unloading of the first truck an attempt was made to determine a "Zero Offset" value for the EASZ-1. After subsequent truck loads (second, third and fourth) a noticeable "Zero Shift" was observed, which after discussions with on-site chemical engineers was determined to result from changing product densities between truckloads and plantations. While unloading of the third truck, the process was stopped and a quantity of water (>100 liters) was added to the tanker.

Once unloading was resumed the values presented by the EASZ-1 quickly increased to 6-7%. A series of hand drawn samples were collected and the subsequent lab analysis was added to the chart below for comparison purposes. The reading slowly fell back to normal, with a short burst of high readings which most likely resulted from a slug of water passing through the EASZ-1.

Conclusions

The test performed by adding water to the third tanker proves the EASZ-1 is very capable of achieving the level alarms that the customer wants to achieve. These particular applications are looking for larger amounts of water, so the offset set off by changing density will have a minor effect the percentage readings . The EASZ-1 is a practical device to be used in loading stations on various types of oil or fuel. The current new development is the intrinsic safe unit Eex ia IIB T4 which has now received official ATEX certification.

In these applications, the factory pre-calibrated 4 inch EASZ-1’s will be programmed to indicate “Zero” on typical low density oils. Each EASZ-1 unit to come with a factory pre-setup display with relay output to activate on pre-defined water content.

Included here are data from the third and fourth truck unloading.
