API Ch 8.2 lays down guidelines for automatic sampling of liquid hydrocarbons.
Once the sample is obtained, the usual method for determining BS&W is by the centrifuge method. The API document covering this method is API Ch 10. API Ch. 10 provides for
- Field centrifuge method
- Laboratory centrifuge method
In the case of this particular client’s requirements he wanted to do the centrifuging in the field because of the long distance of several kilometres to the laboratory. In the cabinet there is a laboratory type mixer with pump and motor which will provide mixing for the collected canister of sample. Centrifuged tubes are kept in the cabinet also and these can be filled from the mixing skid in the cabinet, then centrifuged in the heated centrifuge and the result reported by radio telephone to the production operation manager.
This method precludes the need for transporting the sample containers back and forth to the laboratory.
